It's Monday, so let's get negative. . . . !
This week I want to share a page with you from Showcase #94. I hear you out there, "Showcase #94? Why should I know that, I know I KNOW that. . . " and so on.
Here's why:
Got it? Good. Showcase #94 from 1977 was the first time we saw the "new" Doom Patrol under the pen of Paul Kupperberg and drawn by Joe Staton. Right here is the first time we get to meet Tempest, Celsius, and Negative Woman. You know, the Doom Patrol that was recently resurrected as Black Lanterns? First appearance right here.
I'm going to leave you with Cliff's re-introduction to the Negative being and we'll pick up a little more about this later this week.

This issue has been at the front of my box to review for a couple weeks. I'm still trying to pin down where in continuity Will Magnus and Matt Cable are relative to "Metal Men" and "Swamp Thing" respectively. Yes, there are several fansites with ultra-detailed DC chronologies, but they all contradict each other. (Last night I found one that says this story takes place months after Matt was paralyzed in the 1980's "Swamp Thing" series--sigh.)
ReplyDeleteAnyway, Valentina makes for a versatile source of Negative Mondays. She's not in the Batman/Superman class of guest appearances, but she's nearly a Kevin Bacon of DCU (1st Ambush Bug, Phantom Stranger LS, Crisis, Invasion, etc...).
(Oh, and I know this is about Negative Man/Woman, but if anybody wants some background on Cliff's short-lived funky 70's redesign, click on 'LGC:Doom Patrol' in the upper right hand corner of this page, and when you get there type in either "Byrne" or "DP07" in the search.)
ReplyDeleteWait just a minute here...
ReplyDeleteSo the Doom Patrol premiered in 1963 scant months before the X-Men.
My Greatest Adventure #80 - June 1963
X-Men #1 - Sept 1963
For years fans insist the X-Men was a rip-off of the Doom Patrol (brilliant leader in a wheelchair, freaks turned heroes, etc).
Then the X-Men dramatically revamp the team in Giant-Size X-Men #1, followed up with the All-New, All-Different X-Men #94 in 1975. Two years later, the Doom Patrol revamp the team (also in an issue numbered 94).
All-New, All-Different X-Men #94 - 1975
Showcase #94 - 1977
Both in issues numbered 94. How freaky is that?!?! Who is copying who here?!??!!

Not only that, but the All-New X-Men went international, and so did the All-New Doom Patrol.
ReplyDeleteI remember digging these DP issues of Showcase. Haven't read them in a loooong time...
